What is Off Page Optimisation?

In this part of the ‘How to SEO’ Manual, we will be explaining just what Off page optimisation. Off Page Optimisation is various Search Engine Optimisation techniques which fix and benefit a website accordingly. As it is all ‘OFF PAGE’, none of the methods or techniques are actually carried out directly to the website or on the website. The techniques are done to benefit your website within the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). The most common form of Off Page Optimisation comes in the form of link building. The more (preferably credible) links that are inbound to your website, the better. More links mean more credibility which in turn, means improved PageRank, eventually meaning better rankings within the SERPs.

When link building, there are some things that you must be aware of, although having many links incoming to your website is a good thing, quality definitely outweighs quantity. It is much more beneficial to have a few credible links than have lots of weak links. Low quality inbound links, have little, if any, contribution to your websites ranking. Your website would benefit much more from trusted and credible sources, such as universities, government websites or other high profile and credible websites, even links from directories, like DMOZ and Yahoo! can greatly impact a websites credibility.

There are a few things to be considered when creating or requesting links for your website, the checklist below is some of the most important things to check:

  • Is the website or webpage relevant to my website and what I do?
  • Is the website or webpage going to send the right traffic and right amount of traffic through to my website?
  • Is the website or webpage credible and well ranking within the SERPs?
  • Does the website or webpage have a lot of links to other websites?
  • Is the link beneficial to me? (The ‘rel=nofollow’ tag is a redirect technique which does links to you, but gives you no other advantages)

By meeting these points, your website will benefit greatly from inbound linking. You must also be very clever with the text that links to your website. If the link to your website has a keyword or keyphrase in it (see example below), you will benefit more from that link and will give your site more credibility, just a tip form the keyword front!

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is much better than having Position Gold Ltd as an inbound link as the link includes a keyword that is related to the site.

Summary

You must always take all of the above points into consideration as this will help you towards good off-page Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and good rankings within the search engines.
