Meta Title Tags
The title META tag is like the heading of a document. It appears in the blue bar at the top of your browser, as well as, (and here’s the important bit) the Search engine results page (SERP’s) I.E.

The words within the Title tag carry much weight in terms of ranking and should mirror your keywords. Different search engines will read different amounts of characters within the ranking algorithm. Typically, Google will only value the first 70 - 90 characters, while Yahoo! will value around 130 characters. As with most things, Yahoo! will start mirroring Google counts soon enough. The other aspect of title tag creation is the art of copy writing this is to persuade people to click through from the SERP’s to your site. Many SEO companies have different approaches to this and it itself has many approaches. This is Similar with pay per click title writing, although the restriction of pay click title writing doesn’t apply to Meta title tags. Therefore, you can have full capital letters to make your site stand out in the SERP’s. I don’t like this method visually, but it can get more clicks through. One of my favourites, especially on product pages, is to start my tag with “Click Here for …….” this is a bit of human behavioral psychology. If you tell someone to do something, they normally do it and this can provide a great Return on Investment (ROI). The last one is to use html symbols such as stars, hearts etc. These are great for making your title stand out on the SERP’s, especially hotels or services. For example; try our “★ ★ ★ ★ ★ keyword service”. The one other thing that I would recommend for title tags is to always capitalise the first letter. As with PPC this make your title tags stand out in the SERP’s. In conclusion, out of all the Meta, with the exception of the keyword tag, the title is the most important and most time should be spent testing out different methods, in order to give you the best ROI.
