Site Folder Structure
This entry of the manual talks about the folder structure of the website and how it can aid with the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). As with a lot of things, planning is essential to avoid errors that could occur in the future.
Plan Beforehand
Before any work commences, a folder structure should be planned out. This enables you to group into categories the web pages of your website and structure them so they can be linked together. Using a piece of paper or paint, draw out how you want your website to be constructed. With a homepage at the top and branches splitting off for separate categories. You can then circle the categories and mark out how many folders will be needed.
How many Folders?
This depends on how large your website is or is going to get. If for example you have a website based on animals, you could have a folder to split each type down. A folder for dogs, a folder for cats and a folder for other. This can then be split down further into breeds etc. This ensures that the website has a structure and all web pages can easily be found by humans and indexed by search engines alike.
Name those Folders
This is one of the key elements of creating a great folder structure. Folders with keywords within the name could well help with the SEO. Why have a folder named ‘category1′, when you can have a folder named ‘dogs’ that contains information about dogs.
If someone types in ‘dogs’ into a search engine, the most likely of the two to come up would be the second option. This not only helps search engines, but humans as well. As humans visit a variety of web pages each day we can easily forget the URL of a website that we want to revisit. Most of the time someone will look into their history and find the website they visited. If they see ‘dogs’ in the URL of the many that are available to them they are more likely than not to know that that is the website they are after.
Summary
The key here is to plan beforehand how you would like the website to be constructed, then give all folders relevant names to the content contained inside them. These are the first steps of a great folder structure that will most definitely help your SEO.
