URL Structure - What is it?

Filed under: URL Structure — Damien @ 9:33 am

Everyone knows that they must type something into the address bar of a browser to visit a particular website; this is known as the URL or Uniform Resource Locator. Yet, this URL has a unique structure that not everyone may know about. It is split up into many different parts including not only the domain name of a website but the protocol it uses and the sections it can be split up into.

So what is it?

The URL structure is how the URL is actually comprised. There are many SEO experts who believe that the URL structure can have an impact on rankings for websites. Usually they believe that having a specific keyword incorporated within the URL will improve a websites chance of ranking higher than its competitors who don’t have a keyword included within their URL.  Some people also think having a static URL is much better for search engines to index instead of having a dynamic URL.

Site Structure

The URL structure is directly related to the whole site structure. As explained in the site structure blog there is a root (the homepage) and depending on which site structure you have will depends on what the URL structure will be.

For example - www.positiongoldltd.com is our root, yet a hierarchical site structure is used so the URL structure reflects this. The next level down is for example SEO Feed: www.positiongoldltd.com/SEO-feed.

The further down the levels you go the longer the URL will be. This is not necessarily a good thing due to the fact that search engines will only look at so many characters within an URL. This is why site structure should be taken into account as it depicts having a maximum of only 3 levels.

Summary

To summarise, URL structure goes hand in hand with site structure. If you carefully plan a website and its web pages beforehand, the URL structure should fall into place naturally.
