What is Keyword Density?

Filed under: SEO Manual — Josh @ 10:32 am

In Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), one of the most important techniques in gaining Fantastic results within Search Engine Results Pages (SERP’s), is not only having the correct keywords, but having the correct keyword densities. This is probably one of the most important aspects of writing content, as there are many serious implications of getting the keyword density wrong.

One thing that could happen, if the density is too high, is that the website may be accused of spamming. Spamming keywords involves writing excessive words or phrases within a website, in order to confuse the spiders into thinking that it is legitimate content. On the other end of the scale, if you have too little on a website, then the website will not rank well within the SERP’s.

An example of bad keyword density: a 2500 word document with the keyword being mentioned 4 times. Or, a 2500 word document with the keyword being mentioned 250 times. These keyword densities are vastly off the mark, with both scenarios resulting in poor or none existent ranking.

Keyword Densities are a vital part of SEO as it determines the rankings within the SERP’s. By getting the keyword densities right, a website is almost guaranteed successful rankings. One cannot simply write relevant content and expect to get on the first page of a search engine.

Choosing the right keyword is obviously relevant to the business. E.g. you wouldn’t use ‘post box’ as a keyword for your jewellery website. It involves getting into the psyche of the potential customer, and predicting what things they may search for, such as; ‘wedding rings’.
