What does a search engine consist of?
A search engine consists of many different elements for it to run effectively and efficiently. These main elements consist of four main areas such as spiders, indexer, users and a user friendly interface. Without these running effectively it can have a dramatic effect on the running of the internet, which can affectively cause problems when indexing your website.
Each of these four elements is a vital part when it comes to a search engine. They all work by storing information about different web pages. When the search engine analyses your website it looks thought the content on each web page and then decided where the content is going to be indexed. Many search engines store part or the entire source page as well as content regarding the web page, whereas some store every page or word that they have found.
Below are the four main elements with additional information:
Spiders are used to search through the internet’s web pages, so that it can obtain relevant and efficient information. This is done regularly as the internet market is always evolving new changes and techniques. Indexers then are used to search through the content information so that it can be cached and indexed into relevant and effective categories. This is done mainly due to the amount of queries a search engine has on a day to day basis, which should help provide users with relevant search engine results.Users are a important factor within a search engine as without them the internet would not be a big market like it is today. Also users are what is keep all the companies in business, as due to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) this is what is bringing more traffic to these websites.
Also a very important element is having a user friendly interface. This is important to your users as without having modifiers within the search terms this could loose you alot of traffic. The main three modifiers within a search engine term include of ‘+’, ‘-’ and “”. The best way to explain this is to show you an example. Say you are searching for pubs in Manchester, when the search results appear you may notice that it states pubs located around Manchester or even near Manchester. This is due to the fact that the search engine is reading this search term as three different words, whereas if you search for “pubs in Manchester” including the modifier “”, this allows the search engines to read this search term as one word and bring back more relevant searches such as pubs Manchester.
Further to this, search engines are only useful depending on the relevance of the search results that they bring back. This is due to the fact that, there are many web pages that may contain the keywords or phrases but are not as relevant as others. Many search engines have a ranking system in place to rank the results found in order of the best first.
