What is a search engine?

Filed under: SEO Manual — Kirsty @ 11:22 am

A search engine is a piece of software that is used to create an index of the internet for websites. This index is then matched to queries that are made on a day to day basis. These matches can refer to specific keywords that you have chosen as key terms. When queries are made the search engine looks through all the data within the internet to return relevant results that visitors are looking for. These queries consist of subjects that visitors are wishing to locate. This information does not always consist of written content, but also images, web pages and other types of documents. To gain the relevant results, the search engines use complex systems known as spiders to crawl through every web page within every website that wants to be searchable.

The term search engine is commonly known and is used to refer to web search engines. Due to the ability of the software search engines are able to index large amounts of web pages at one single time within the World Wide Web. Search engines are in place to help organise more than a billion pages of different types of information and make them accessible to any internet user. Once this has been achieved the search engine begins to generate a list of websites that matches the search query and rank them in order of relevance. When the search engines index your website, they generally do this by a Keyphrase, so that when a user searches the internet and it is relevant to your products or services this potential customer will be directed to your website.

In addition, search engines are able to locate online information on a wide variety of subjects. This is why companies are fighting to get listed within the first page of the search engine result page (SERP). Studies have shown that internet users usually do not look any further than the second pages of the SERP as they believe that companies listed after this point are not doing as well. Therefore the first page results are more likely to receive a lot more traffic, as users gain automatic trust with them due to their positioning within the search engines.
