History of the Internet

Filed under: SEO — Mathew @ 4:14 pm

Being a search engine optimisation (SEO) company as you can tell we use the internet constantly (even at home most of us use the internet). In this article I am going to give you a brief history of the internet and where it came from.

In 1957 the USSR launched their Sputnik satellite which became the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth successfully. In response to this the US Department of Defence (DoD) launched ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency). ARPA brought together some of the most brilliant people in America, within 18 months they had developed the first successful United States satellite. After this they continued to focus on computer networking and communications. This research later led to ARPANET, ARPANET was the world’s first packet switching network. Using packet switching ARPANET was able to provide information to several computers on a network via a single communication.

The reason for the design of the internet was to allow a permanent communication network throughout the country, even in the event of a nuclear attack. If a network point was destroyed the communication would simply choose a different route to its desired destination.

The invention of TCP/IP and the World Wide Web revolutionized the way we use computers to access data and the internet, using TCP/IP users were able to designate each computer on a LAN (Local Area Network) with a separate IP address. Every website accessible on the web has an IP address assigned to it. When a user enters a URL into their web browser, this URL is then sent to the DNS server (often your internet service provider); the DNS server then converts the URL to an IP address. Using this IP address the web browser is able to communicate with the web server using the TCP/IP protocol. The DNS server (Domain Name System) uses a globally distributed database which will convert domain names to IP addresses.

In the last 2 decades the internet has grown exponentially with people buying up domains left right and centre. The shorter the domain name the harder it will be to purchase it, or even find it to be available. A big trend that has hit the internet involves People purchasing domain names they know people or companies will want, and will pay big bucks for. A lot of these purchases are done at auctions devoted to domain names. Some of these purchasers often cover the website in advertisement which gains them revenue. Another trick like this is to buy domains which are similar to big company names and websites; this is done in the hope of when users mistype the domain they will end up at their site instead which again is full of adverts to gain revenue.

Another leap the computing industry took was that of CSS and HTML. Using HTML web designers and developers are able to create layouts of pages providing the user with a nicer layout to find the information they require. Using CSS, web designers are able to improve their layouts by making the website look how they see it in their head. This allows great flexibility in creating complex layouts.

I hope this article has been educational and is found to be interesting.
