NoFollow and your SEO
As part of the process of deciding who ranks where within the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages) Pagerank is considered. Now, I do not believe for one minute that Pagerank alone carries most the weighting for the rankings but I do think it plays a vital part.
Keep Your Pagerank
So you have a website, and it has achieved a Pagerank of 6 - that’s great. Now all you have to do is keep most of that credit within your own website. One way to do this is to not link to too many websites leading out. I’m not saying don’t link to anybody, but keep it to selected websites that you think are worth linking to as a part of you Pagerank will be passed out to them.
If you must have a range of links to outside websites on your website the ‘nofollow’ tag can be used on all Href’s. This tag means that no Pagerank is leaked out to the outside websites and it is all kept internally.
When to use nofollow?
The use of nofollow disables the diluting of your own websites Pagerank. This not only works with outbound links, but also with internal website links as well. So for example, the ‘terms and conditions’ link at the bottom of a web page would be nofollow. This is because the page doesn’t carry too much importance in regards to the rest of the content on the website and therefore does not need to be given Pagerank.
You can also use nofollow on comments people leave on your website. This means that they can not abuse the option of creating a link to one of their websites of choice and diluting your Pagerank even further.
Summary
The nofollow tag is a great way to keep control of your Pagerank. This enables your website to keep its Pagerank weighting and only give it out to chosen websites or web pages within its own site. This gives the admin of a website authority over giving out Pagerank weight.
