Position Gold- The Olympic Gold of SEO

The Official Olympic Games Logo
As you will doubtlessly be aware, the Beijing 2008 Olympics started this week, with the opening ceremony (costing $300 million) being an amazing display of Chinese history, rainbows of colour from costumes, flags and athletes and of course an astonishing firework display, which featured 35,000 shells in just over 20 minutes. China has made quite an entrance to the new world. Yet Being a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Company, it is easy to see the similarities between Position Gold and the Olympic Games.
The first Olympic Games began in 776BC in Olympia in Ancient Greece, they were held in the Honour of The Greek God Zeus. They Lasted 1,169 years until 393AD, when Emperor Theodosius decreed that all pagan cults were to be banned. It wasn’t until 1,503 years later until the Olympic Games began again at the Athens 1896 Olympics. Similarly, the internet first began development in the late 1960s; it then went rather quiet before the browser wars really boosted the internet’s profile, making it a world wide brand and everyday name, as are the Olympic Games.
Being a patriotic company, Position Gold is fully behind Team Great Britain, hoping they surpass the medal horde of 30 in the Athens 2004 Olympics. As we at Position Gold also aim to improve upon our already high standards and strive to reach the top of the podium in SEO. With Team GBs first medal coming in the form of Gold, is a promising Olympics in store?
Nicole Cooke won the First medal for Great Britain in the Road Race Cycling event, despite the torrential downpour on the Great Wall of China. Although it looked like she may have blown her chance at the near finish as when approaching the final bend she wandered 20m of course, however Cooke’s mantra, ‘Pain is temporary- but glory is ever lasting’, ensured her the victory. In an SEO campaign, endurance is a key factor to reaching and maintaining the number one spot on a Search Engines Results Page (SERP). It is obvious that Nicole Cooke would not have been able to simply jump on her bike and win gold, there would have been training, practicing and devoted gym visits to ensure victory. In SEO, there are also unseen actions that enable a victory on the SERP’s.
Great Britain’s second two medals came in the 400m freestyle, with Rebecca Adlington winning Gold and Jo Jackson winning Bronze. This was the first gold medal won in a female swimming event since Anita Lonsbrough won Gold in the 200m breast stroke in the Rome 1960 Olympics.
Another expected hopeful In Team GBs Assault on the Olympic medals table is the 14 year old diver, Tom Daley. However, with him and Blake Aldridge finishing last in the synchronised diving event, have we pinned our hopes on a talent which is yet to blossom? Tom Daley can redeem himself later in the Games in the individual 10m Platform event, yet is this going to be just further practice for London 2012? Perhaps the long term is a better strategy as after all; long term SEO techniques are much more effective than short term techniques.
With disappointment already pinned on some of Great Britain’s hopefuls, are we in for an all over let down? Our women’s Hockey Team were crushed by Germany 5-1 in an early fixture, is this going to ring true for other matches? Our Women Archers Failed to hit the target as they lost to France in the Archery event, Finishing 4th overall. Judo also saw a narrow miss for Team GB in the medals, as although Craig Fallon looked to be the likely victor, when push came to shove he was thrown twice in under a minute by Israeli Gal Yekutiel. An unfortunate example of reaching a highlight of your sporting career, and then not having the momentum, skill or luck to go the full distance. Let downs are also present in the world of internet marketing. Pay Per Click campaigns may enable you to reach the height of the SERP’s, yet the overall and long term performance may let you down.
But there are many hopefuls within the team GB ranks. Our hard hitting boxers seem to be taking things in their stride with Billy Joe Saunders easily beating the world number 3 in a preliminary welter weight boxing event. Equally Bradley Saunders, who was competing in the light-welter weight category, won by a KO to get himself through to the last sixteen in his weight. SEO also uses hard hitting tactics, to enable a website to punch its weight in the tough world of Search Engines.
In SEO, there are the Long distance races and the sprints. To speak more laterally, the long distance race is Search Engine Optimisation. The Sprints are Pay Per Click (PPC). Leading the GB marathon team, we have the ever smiling Paula Radcliffe. Who will undoubtedly lead Team GB to Long Distance Race gold, similar to how SEO will lead your website to a long term first place in the SERP’s. The Sprints are the quick/ short term answers to internet marketing. For events such as the 100m Sprint, they may look very impressive and achieve rapid results but the race is over very quickly. This rings true in PPC campaigns, as they may achieve a quick result yet they are often only very short term.
There are some unfortunate instances of cheating in the Olympics, which do tarnish the atmosphere and experience. Great Britain’s Dwayne Chambers has been banned from taking part in this years’ Olympics after appealing against his ban for illegal, performance enhancing substances. This is also the case with Greek woman Katerina Thanou, who failed to attend a drugs test at the 2004 Athens Olympics; she has been banned from the Beijing Olympics. Although she was provisionally approved to compete in the games, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided not to let her take part due to improper behaviour and bringing the games into disrepute. Unfortunately, there are such occurrences in SEO, where Black Hat techniques are used to improve the SERP listings. These Un-ethical methods are essentially the same as using illegal drugs to improve ones personal attributes to place better in races. Except the illegal drugs are SEO techniques, the personal attributes are a websites information and the races are the SERP’S.
There are some white knights in the Olympics, who relate directly to white hat SEO techniques. The aforementioned, young Tom Daley who speaks of the Olympics as a great experience and fantastic fun, and of course Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, for who, is incredibly familiar with the Olympic Games having won five consecutive gold medals from 1984 to 2000. Dame Kelly Holmes who won Two Gold Medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics is another ambassador for Team Great Britain. These Athletes all aim to be the best and gain the best for their country. This honourable attribute is similar to white hat techniques of SEO as white hat techniques use the most legal, honest and ethical methods to gain the best for the customers website.
This year holds potential to be one of the greatest sporting spectacles to date, with 10,500 taking part in 302 events in 28 sports. Team Great Britain has many hopes pinned upon them, and Position Gold are fully behind them in reaching Olympic Gold and Olympic Greatness. If it is Search Engine Optimisation that you require, Position Gold will ensure you reach the top podium place. Go for Gold- Position Gold.
