Search engine Optimisation (SEO) 101 Series Content is king!

Filed under: SEO — Rob @ 3:39 pm

Content is king! Is one of the most important sayings in SEO. Content is one of the fundamentals of SEO, in fact I believe relevant Content is one of the most important issues on the web. Believe it or not so do the search engines, this also applies to all users, when searching the web what are you looking for? Information i.e. relevant content . Therefore the search engines put heavy weighting on relevant content and I will be banging on about it in a lot of my blogs, and then some. So now that we have got that into our heads lets look at some of the issues regarding content.

First up Duplication of content is a big one, the search engines value unique content as users don’t want  to read the same thing over and over again. As users don’t want  to read the same thing over and over again see what I mean?

Now the Web can be plagiarism central but as long as you’re not doing the plagiarism every thing will OK, the search engines will spider your unique content and will date it. Then if the same content is spidered on another website at a later date the search will know who originally created the content and reward them accordingly. I say reward it, more like penalise the site with the duplicate content on. So as long as you do not copy content from other site you will come out on top.

The other issues with duplicate content is with your site itself, small amounts are expectable but large sections on every page is not advised. If you strip all the duplicate content out of your site and are left with nothing that’s exactly what the search engine will be ranking you on; nothing.

One final word on duplicate content. If for example you’re writing a blog or article which is on your web site, but you’re planning to distribute it around the web. Either through blogging sites or press release, just include a link back to your site. This allows the search engine to figure out that this is where the original content came from.

There is a lot more to content than I have mentioned here but if your an avid reader of my blog we will revisit soon.
