Search engine Optimisation (SEO) 101 Series Meta Tags

Filed under: SEO — Rob @ 9:52 am

As this is my first blog for position gold as an SEO I thought I’d cover some of the basics. So if your new to SEO this is the place to start, and if you’re an old hand this can help as a refresher course. Before I continue I will just give you a bit of background regarding my self, university educated in software engineering I moved in to web development and in early 2006 moved in to search engine optimisation and have been there ever since. I have a great love and interest for the subject and I hope that this is apparent in my work.

Enough about me let’s look at some of the basic issues relating to SEO. Now remember these are some of the basics but I will be discussing the more advanced methodology later in the series. At a basic level SEO can appear very easy but this is were the most common mistakes are made and your site will suffer for it.

So the first thing were going to look at is meta information and title information. Title information is what appears in the blue bar of your selected browser, this is the equivalent of a books title and informs the the search engines what the pages are about. This should match the content of the page.

The are 2 main types of meta information when it comes to basic SEO; Description and Keywords. The description should be a short description of what the page is about much like a prologue in a book, this also appears in search engine results pages (SERPs) and should entice your audience to click though to your page.

Meta Keywords; these are probably the most important of the 3. This should contain the core word your site is targeting and should conform to the web master guide line of the selected search engine/s you are targeting. A couple of things to avoid for you keywords, don’t include misspellings; this is bordering on an unethical technique and is as dead as the dinosaur second don’t worry about plurals unless you are in a really competitive market i.e. Loan, Insurance Mortgages etc.
